Jeg vil gerne takke Formand Malagò for de venlige ord og sende en hilsen til alle: til Forbundet, til teknikere, trænere, assistenter, men især til jer, kære atleter.
Jeg har dog ikke tænkt mig at overøse jer med ord. For jeg er overbevist om, at I får masser at vide i disse dage, fra trænere, coaches og fra teknikere.
Det sidste, I har brug for er, at Republikkens Præsident tilføjer en ekstra byrde og jeg vil derfor begrænse mig til ganske få ting.
Først og fremmest tillykke med, at I er her.
Udvælgelseskravene har været meget strenge. Så hvis I er nået hertil, betyder det, at I allerede har udvist og demonstreret et ekstraordinært talent og det er i sig selv en succes.
Jeg har i virkeligheden kun én ting at sige til jer og det er, at I har hele Italiens hengivenhed. En oprigtig hengivenhed, der ikke skal tolkes som et pres.
Jeg vil gerne bede jer om ikke at føle noget pres på jer selv.
Jeg er sikker på, at I vil udtrykke jeres store talent maksimalt – alle sammen – og at I vil gøre det med stort engagement, med dedikation og med sportånd.
De medaljer, der måtte komme, vil være velkomne.
For et øjeblik siden hørte jeg nationalhymnen. Det er altid en smuk oplevelse og det er endnu smukkere, når den spilles for jer på sejrsskamlen. Men – jeg gentager – I må ikke føle jer pressede.
I skal konkurrere i fred og med ro i sindet, for det giver jer den bedste mulighed for at udtrykke jeres evner og talenter.
Og jeg vil også gerne tilføje, at I har et budskab til omverdenen.
I denne komplicerede verden – som vi også talte om, da vi mødtes i Præsidentpaladset – på dette tidspunkt, hvor så mange lande er forsamlede, og så mange atleter fra andre lande, er det et budskab om civiliseret optræden, om venskab, om håb og om international harmoni.
Derfor ønsker jeg jer alle held og lykke.
Og som sagt, medaljerne er vigtige, men det vigtigste, er det, I altid har vist og vil vise: Sportsånden og sansen for at konkurrere med engagement, med loyalitet, med et ønske om at overgå jer selv, i jeres egne målestokke, og alt dette er en værdifuld arv.
Jeg takker jer for dette møde og ser frem til at dele disse øjeblikke med jer.
Og jeg ønsker endnu engang al muligt held og lykke til jer alle sammen!

I thank President Malagò for his kind words of welcome and salute you all: the Federation, technicians, coaches, assistants, but especially you dear athletes.
I do not intend to burden you with many words. I am convinced that you receive plenty of them these days, from trainers, from coaches, from technicians.
The last thing you need is for the President of the Republic to add an extra burden. So I will limit myself to just a few things.
First of all, congratulations to you for being here!
The selection criteria were very strict. If you have made it to this point, it means that you have shown and demonstrated an extraordinary talent and that is already an achievement in itself.
Naturally, what I want to tell you is this: you have the affection of the whole of Italy. A sincere affection that you must not interpret as a pressure.
Please do not feel any pressure on yourselves.
I am confident that you will express your great talent to the utmost – all of you – and that you will do so with great commitment, dedication and sportsmanship.
The medals that may come will be welcome.
Just now, I heard the national anthem. It is always wonderful to hear it, and it is even more beautiful when played for you on the competition podium, but – I repeat – you must not feel any pressure.
You must compete with serenity and tranquility, because this allows you to express your abilities and talents to the fullest.
And I would also add that you have a message to give.
In this complicated world – as we discussed at the Quirinale when we met – in a moment when so many Nations are gathered, and so many athletes from other countries, it is a message of civilization, of friendship, of hope, of international serenity.
And so I wish you all the best of luck.
I repeat, the medals may be important, but what is truly important is what you have always shown and will show: the sense of sportsmanship, of competing with commitment, with loyalty, with a desire to surpass yourselves, according to your own standards, and all this is a great heritage.
I thank you for this meeting. It will be a pleasure to be with you in these moments.
